This is a beautiful thing to look at. But I wonder if the cross-drilled fins actually run cooler?
I have an idea that cooling is a function of airflow and surface area. So maybe airflow has been increased but it looks like surface area has been decreased.

I imagine reduced radiant surface would equal reduced cooling efficiency, and a quick scan of my Physics encyclopedia seems to confirm that.
